History Brela - Historical and Cultural Information about Brela
We must go back into the past for more than two millenniums when we speak about the history of Brela. The first patron of this Adriatic oasis - Berylliae of the Antiquity, is Silvan, the Illyrian-Roman god of woods and untouched nature. In this homeland of Mediterranean secrets the ecology has found its name still in the ancient times, but in 1937 is considered to be the beginning of organized tourism.

In the old documents of Konstantin Porfirogenet we can find data that mentions Berulia, a place situated in today’s territory of Brela. This is the evidence of life in this area in the late Roman period. Today's place has originated in the recent period, when people migrated from villages at the foot of Biokovo Mountain. The parish church from the 19th century was built where there used to be an old baroque church, and next to the graveyard there is a medieval barrow with eight gravestones decorated with relieves and there are several gravestones from the 18th century in the church.
